    Roseau High School

    Choir Guidelines for

7th, Varsity, Eclipse and Concert Choirs

    2016-2017

    Comprehensive Goals:

Purposeful Thinker, Effective Communicator, Self Directed Learner, Productive Group Participant, and Responsible Citizen

    Task Management Skills

    1. Resource Management
    2. Have a sharpened pencil (optional)
    3. Have your music folder everyday.
    4. Keep personal items to yourself.
    5. Take care of sheet music you are using.
    6. Time Management
    7. Be seated, in your proper spot, and ready to go when the bell rings. Do not take the pass ahead of time; wait until after attendance is taken. (It will be warm-ups first then attendance).
      1. 2 tardies (per year) = Warning
      2. 3 tardies (per year) = Parents notified
      3. 4 & 5 tardies (per year) = Detention with classroom teacher ½ hour.
      4. Any tardy after that = Parents contacted and additional detention.
      5. Five minutes late for class that is unexcused, automatic detention.
    8. Remain in your chair until we are finished.
    9. Have all materials in class and ready for use.
    10. Take care of personal needs between classes.
    11. Put away folders at the end of class.

    III. Perseverance

    1. Work to become a better singer and musician.
    2. Work to learn your music.
    3. Use proper posture.
    4. Respect Others, Self and School
    5. Be attentive to instruction.
    6. Treat classmates and teachers with courtesy and respect.
    7. Do not talk when others are singing or working on their parts. This has been a major problem in the past.
    8. No GUM, POP, COLORED LIQUIDS or FOOD in class. (Water or cough drops are okay)
    9. No hats, caps, bandanas, or skullcaps in class.
    10. Follow the rules of the dress code.
    11. No electronic devices during class. Turn off phones! Devices can and will be confiscated for the duration of the class period and given to the office if the need arises. (Detention may be given and ALL daily points will taken away)

    Grades

Grades will be determined by the effort that he/she puts into their selected choral ensemble. This will be comprised of these elements: rehearsal and performance attendance; and participation during class rehearsal; voice lessons. Extra credit can also be obtained throughout the year. The 7th grade choir will also be graded on the theory work they do throughout the year. When Eclipse or the choir is performing it will be 10 points per song. Concerts are 100 points each.  Voice lessons for the Concert Choir are 40 points (1 per quarter needed).

    Daily points

Everyday each student will start with 10 points. These will be attitude and responsibility points. These 10 points will count toward your final grade and it will be up to the individual student to maintain these points each day.

You can have points deducted each day in the following ways:

Not having your materials for class.

Not staying on task during rehearsals or written work.

    Late for class or performances.

    Disruptive behavior

    TALKING while others are rehearsing.

    Unexcused absences from rehearsal.

    Missing performances excused or not

Bringing GUM, POP, FOOD (unless allowed), or COLORED LIQUIDS to class. (water and cough drops are allowed)

Cell Phone or any other electronic devices being used during class without permission. (all points lost)

    Not putting away your folder.

    Improper dress for performances.

ISS and OSS (all daily points forfeited those days).

The more severity of the problem, the more points you will have taken away. If you are absent and it is excused, you will not loose 10 points but you will not gain it either, it will be marked as no count in the grade book.

    Other General Rules

    1. No personal phone calls during class time, unless you receive a note from the office to call someone. Please take care of other matters outside of class.
    2. My office is off limits to all students unless there needs to be a conference or other matters arise.
    3. Once you get into class you will not be allowed to leave unless you have a pass, on the early out list, or involved in an activity going on during school. 7-9 will be allowed only two passes to leave per quarter.10-12 will use the plastic pass and 7th -9th need to have their planners in order to leave. Do not take the HS pass until attendance has been taken. Then you need to ask to use it. Only one person per planner/pass, unless authorized (library).
    4. If you need to leave, please wait until after warm-ups.
    5. No music is to leave the room unless you talk to me or sign out for it.
    6. No graffiti on any of the bulletin, white, or smart boards, and do not erase what is written on the white board.
    7. Please do not play the grand piano unless you are accompanying a choir. Use the other piano in the practice room to play on but ask first.
    8. Take care of your folder and music. You will be charged for any damage.
    9. Hang up robes and outfits after performances.
    10. Work is not an excuse to miss a performance. (Eclipse especially) Schedules have been handed out ahead of time, make arrangements with your bosses.
    11. No food! This is not a lunch room. (You can eat out in the hall before the bell)
    12. Working on homework during rehearsal and warm-ups is not allowed unless I am having a sectional and your group is not singing that day.
    13. Even if you are sick and cannot sing, still follow along with the music.
    14. Stay out of the file cabinets unless you talk to me about looking for music.

Performances will count as part of the final grade

(Being choir has little to no written work; I consider our performances the equivalent to tests in other classes)

                10 points per song.

                Concerts are 100 points

Choir tour is around 200 points

    Voice lessons and sectionals

Voice lesson are designed to help the student with his/her choral, solo and ensemble music. This is also a time for the director to evaluate the progress of the sections music. Voice lessons will be for concert choir only unless a varsity choir member is singing for a contest. It will be the students responsibility to take a least one each quarter to receive an A in choir. Each lesson is only 20 minutes. A missed voice lesson automatically drops one half of a letter grade. Students may attend lessons by themselves or with someone from their same section. Please sign up at least a day ahead of time and NOT the same day. You need to go to your other class first and make sure it is okay, do not skip (detention will be issued if you skip a class for lessons). Please do not show up during a voice lesson hour unless you have signed up ahead of time.  Lessons will be worth 40 points each. This year voice lessons will be only offered during the two voice lesson hours (3rd and 5th hour).

    Make Up Work

Students will be allowed two days to make up missed assignments: tests, rehearsals, performances, etc unless other arrangements have been made…. All make up work must be approved by the director.

                Extra Credit

Extra credit will be earned by students who:

                            10 points each

Write reports (10 points per page)

Perform a solo, duet, ensemble outside of school performances (written note or name on program)

                                        Extra voice lessons (concert choir)

                                        5 points each

  • 7th grade theory

Most Wednesdays, the 7th grade will be working on theory. Not only is important to be able to sing, but I feel it is equally important to know what all the signs on the music page are. We will be doing theory on Wednesdays, unless extra rehearsal time is needed for the concerts. 90% of the theory will be done in class and the theory books will stay in the classroom. There will be quizes and tests periodically that it will be up to the students responsibility to take home and study the contents of the theory book. 7th graders will be doing one full book plus about 1/3 of the next theory book.
