Roseau School District approves 2017-18 school calendar

The Roseau School Board approved the 2017-18 school calendar during its regular monthly meeting held on March 13.  The Board reviewed and discussed three different calendar options prior to adopting next year’s calendar.  The calendar options were developed by representatives of the Roseau Teachers Association, building Principals, and a School Board member.

Calendar Option #1 can best be described as a “traditional schedule” where dates of when school is in session are defined with breaks from students and teachers attending school typical to previous school calendars.

Calendar Option #2 eliminated the traditional March winter break and thereby created two “floating days” for use as make-up days for emergency school closing (eg:  snow day).

Calendar Option #3 also eliminated the traditional March winter break and created two “floating days” for use as make-up days for emergency school closing.  If the floating days are not used, there would be a longer Easter Break.

After review and discussion of the merits of the calendar options, the Board approved by a 5-1 margin to adopt the more traditional school calendar with defined breaks from school consistent with many previous academic years.  Board member Didrikson cast the lone opposing vote.

Since MN Statute does not permit school (classes) to start before Labor Day, the first student day of the 2017-2018 school year will be Tuesday, September 5, 2017.  Fall break will be Oct. 19-20, aligning with the Minnesota Educator Academy conference (MEA break) as it has in previous years.

As is typical, school is out for Thanksgiving Nov. 23 and 24.  Winter break will begin Dec. 23 until classes resume Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2018.

No classes will be held Monday, Jan. 15, 2018, in observation of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.  Teachers however, will be working and engaged in professional development activities on ML King Day.  Spring break is March 8-9.  There will no school for students and staff for the Easter Break from March 29 thru April 2.

With Board approval, the 2017-2018 school calendar may be amended to make – up day(s) because of weather related or other emergency school closing.  Although few make-up days have been necessary in the past, typically make-up day(s) take place around the Easter Break.

The last day for seniors is May 23rd with graduation for the Class of 2018 on Sunday, May 27th.  The last day of school for students in K-11 is on May 31.   The 2017-2018 school calendar adopted by the Board is posted on the School website <> under the SCHOOLS tab.

What a great way to end the winter sports season with a Girls State Class AA Basketball Championship!  Way to GO RAMS.
